„Cavity Search” Gabe’a Floresa to projektem w postaci kolacji, która składać się będzie z dziesięciu deserów: od wytrawnego do słodkiego, oraz napojów. Uczestnicy będą musieli podporządkować się kilku zasadom panującym podczas dionizyjskiej uczty, ale także będą działać jako wolni uczestnicy wydarzenia.
Osoby uczestniczące w kolacji założą takie same koszulki wykonane przez artystę, będą musieli zjeść i wypić to, co przygotuje artysta oraz będą zobowiązani do wypełnienia kwestionariusza, na podstawie którego Gabe Flores przygotuje indywidualne wiadomości dla każdego z uczestników.
„Cavity Search” porusza zagadnienia przyjemności, wolnej woli oraz wytrzymałości.
W wielu aspektach „Cavity Search” jest drogą wniknięcia uczestników w artystę. Przygotowywanie deserów dla Gabe’a było główną drogą narracji odkąd skończył 9 lat i nadal jest jednym ze sposobów równoważenia informacji. Osobiste wiadomości ukryte pod deserami są delikatną rekonstrukcją głosów, które tylko Gabe mógł słyszeć ponad 8 lat temu. Indywidualne wiadomości są narracją tego, co artysta nazywa alternatywnym postrzeganiem norm statystycznych.
Gabe Flores wychowany jako Świadek Jehowy często zastanawiał się nad siłą grupowego myślenia. Stawiając oczekiwania, wyznaczając wytyczne ludzie często celują dalej, niż mogą samodzielnie dotrzeć.

Prace Gabe’a Flores stanowią refleksję nad tożsamością opartą na ideologiach i osobistej narracji. Obecne projekty badają socjologiczne i kulturalne przemieszczenia, w których artysta poszukuje własnej tożsamości społecznej, seksualnej, kulturowej. Gabe Flores w pracy wykorzystuje różne media i materiały, które jego zdaniem są najlepszym środkiem wyrazu własnych celów.
Gabe Flores otrzymał tytuł magistra z socjologii, nauk społecznych i historii oraz tytuł licencjata z psychologii na Portland State Univeristy. Obecnie jest dyrektorem i kuratorem w galerii Place and Settlement w Portland.

Gabe Flores „Cavity Search”

Cavity Search is a dinner made up of 10 dessert courses going from savory to sweet with paired beverages. The guests agree to follow some basic guidelines during the Dionysian style meal, but also act as free participants for the duration. Some of the expectations of the guests are the following: they wear the shirt-like garment provided; they eat and drink everything; they fill out the questionnaire prior; and they give consent for Gabe Flores to create personalized messages to them individually throughout the meal. Cavity Search explores themes of pleasure, free-will, and endurance.
In many ways Cavity Search is a tactic of stepping into Gabe Flores for a few hours. Desserts have been a major part of Gabe’s narrative since he was 9 and is still one of his primary ways of practicing how to balance information. The personal messages placed under the desserts are a mild reenactment of the voices he alone could hear a little over 8 years ago. The individualized messages follow the narrative arc of what he calls his alternative perception to the statistical norm. Also, being raised as a Jehovah’s Witness Gabe often wonders about the power of the hive mind. Given the right setting, guidelines, and expectations people often pocess the ability to excel farther than they might have been able to all on their own.

Gabe Flores’ works often deal with his reflections on identity-based ideologies and personal narrative. His current and near future work explores displacement as well as social/cultural navigation and he works in whatever medium he feels will best help him exemplify his pursuit. Flores received a BS in Sociology, Political Science, and History with a minor in Psychology from Portland State University. Gabe Flores is a Director and Curator of Place and Settlement Gallery in Portland.
