Poland lies in central Europe. People in Poland are known for their hospitality, and prices are low. Cracow, the former capital of Poland, is a city wrapped in legend.
For centuries Cracow was the capital of Poland, the seat of kings, drawing great scholars and artists from the whole world. It is a place, miracously unharmed over the centuries, where people cling to the roots of identity. The city reflects the most important trends in European culture, and represents a synthesis of all things Polish, connecting tradition with modernity. Cracow has a strong intellectual tradition, begun with the founding of the Cracow Academy in 1364. Copernicus studied there. Since then Cracow has collected interesting, creative people. Pope John Paul II is one of the most famous Cracow’s sons. The musician Krzysztof Penderecki, the film – maker Roman Polański, and the Nobel – winning writers Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska have strong ties with the city. The Rynek, or market sqare, is reputed to be the largest medieval square in all Europe. It is graced with fountains, an arcaded Renaissance cloth hall, Gothic facades, St.Mary’s Church with the famous Veit Stoss wooden altar – the finest piece of Gothic art in Poland, Adam Mickiewicz monument, flower sellers and legendary Lajkonik. The Wawel Cathedral and Castle are not far from the market sqare on a hill overlooking the Vistula. Wawel is the spiritual and cultural heart of Poland. You can see there the acient royal seat where for 500 years kings were crowned, saints canonised … .There is something mythical about the city which is also very cosmopolitan.
